The surprise release of OWSLA’s newest album HOWSLA lived up to OWSLA’s visionary standards. House music + OWSLA = HOWSLA. HOWSLA includes tracks from the legendary Chris Lake, Skrillex, Joyryde, and Autoerotique.
HOWSLA dropped on Cinco De Mayo. The release party was nothing short of what you’d expect from OWSLA: FUN, low-key, comical, and laid-back.
The release party was held at an undisclosed artist’s warehouse in South Los Angeles. On the roof Team Ezy and Point Point were DJing, there was an inflatable boxing ring, a skate ramp, ORGANIC beer, and Free Grilled Cheese. After watching people squash their beef in the boxing ring and shred the gnar on the ramp, guests were ushered inside where Chris Lake, Dombresky, Habstrakt, Born Dirty and Ghastly were DJing. If Heaven is anything like this, I want IN.
Operator by Chris Lake showcases Chris Lake’s deep house roots with a grime twist. Chicken Soup by Skrillex and Habstrakt is sick & durty. Tony Quattro’s track Fuerza makes me feel like I’m in a jungle in Ibiza, if Ibiza had a jungle. Freeek by Alex Metric takes me to house in the future. New Breed by Joyryde makes me feel like I’m driving a low-rider in outer space. I want you by Chris Lake is packed with dreamy future house vibes, see the music video here. Lasers by Noizu could be the soundtrack for aliens playing lazer tag. On Air by Marc Spence reminds me of an apocalyptic Simpsons episode. Run by Wiwek combines jungle terror with house. Bling by Autoerotique is grime in music form. What’s going on by Tony Romera closes out the album on a grime techno note. Say it with me one more time: grime.
The Nest HQ announced HOWSLA’s summer residency at Le Jardin (1430 N Cahuenga Blvd) in Hollywood. The first show of the summer will be next Sunday, June 4th.
